About Deborah Gregory
Deborah Gregory MBACP

I am a fully qualified and deeply experienced counsellor with a background in the Social Care field. Initially, I worked with children and young adults with emotional and behavioural difficulties for a number of years before qualifying as a professional counsellor. Alongside my private practice I continue to counsel young people (age range 18+) in clinic, and hold an enhanced (highest level) disclosure and barring service check (DBS). Since I began my counselling training in 1997 I have been working with a wide range of psychological issues.

I often describe my counselling career as a vocation, motivated by a lifelong curiosity in people and their capacity to develop in positive ways. I have a passion for what I do and I think that translates in the work. I believe the quality of the therapeutic relationship, rather than any one particular theoretical orientation, is the most important aspect of successful work. There is nothing more satisfying for me as a therapist than to see individuals and couples that I work with enjoy more fulfilling relationships with themselves and others.

I will encourage my clients (where possible) to keep a therapy journal, in which to record their thoughts, feelings and reflections during our sessions. It is well known that people who journal discover a higher sense of self-awareness and a greater freedom of expression. If you connect to what I’ve shared here, I invite you to explore my website further and contact me if you would like to take that next step.

Qualifications and Training

I hold an Advanced Diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Counselling and have been working with clients of all ages for over 27 years. I work in a client-centred style drawing on a wealth of clinical resources and skills to suit your individual needs. I believe this integrative approach and flexibility allows me to tailor my response to the individual requirements of each therapy client.

I attend regular, ongoing Counselling Supervision with a highly experienced Supervisor. I undertake professional training courses and attend monthly therapy workshops to keep my skills up-to-date and to learn of new developments. Since 1997 I have undertaken a broad range of therapeutic and certified counselling and psychotherapy training courses including:

Anger Management, Anxiety and Panic, Bereavement, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Couple Counselling, Depression, Domestic Violence, Eating Disorders, LGBTQ Awareness, Low self-esteem, Mindfulness, Nutritional Therapy, (Complex) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Pregnancy and Birth, Rape and Sexual Assault, Self-Harming, Sexuality, Understanding Suicide, Managing Stress and Vicarious Trauma.

I consider myself a life-long student; I never tire of learning. I hold a passionate belief in the healing power of therapy and a deep respect for the work of Carl Jung and the wisdom of the body. Since 2007 I have been studying Jungian Psychology in depth, discovering the intriguing world of archetypes, dreams and exploring the second half of life. Similar to Jung, I affirm the mind-body-spirit-soul connection, which in 2012 led me to undertake a BANT approved training course with the Institute of Optimum Nutrition (ION). This in-depth training has given me a greater understanding of nutrition, enabling me to offer clients sound nutritional advice if required and where appropriate.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I work with couples of all ages; married or living together, separating or divorcing; with or without children to consider.  Couple counselling can also benefit other types of couples such as siblings, friends and colleagues. Therapy is often short term with just a few sessions needed to turn relationships around or at least help them to separate in a more amicable way. Couple sessions take place on a fortnightly basis.

Issues regarding all kinds of family break ups including divorce, separation and estrangement within families, alongside dealing with difficult people in the workplace. For many years I have offered counselling and support to those struggling with the impact of terminal illness, significant loss and bereavement.  I am keen to support those who would like to develop a healthier relationship with food.

My approach is LGBTQ+ inclusive.  I actively affirm diversity in my practice and value the opportunity to support those who may want to work through issues relating to their identity, sexuality or gender.  I hold great trust in the language of our dreams, particularly when understood through the extensive work of psychologist Carl Jung, and will work closely with a person’s dreams where this relevant or desirable.
